Wise and Foolish Virgins: Light, #5

The Presentation in the Temple, Harmensz van Rijn Rembrandt, c. 1640

“For the commandment is a lamp; and the Law/Torah is light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life.” – Proverbs 6:23

Nativity, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1654

Law/Torah is light.

Yeshua is an example of Torah being lived out—word made flash. Yeshua spoke:

“…I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” – Yohannan 8:12

“A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.” – Yohannan 12:35

This idea is also present in:

“…God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie…” – Yohannan 1:5-6

The light of Torah is present in the disciples: “You are the light of the world.” – Matthew 5:14

In conclusion:
Lamp is commandment,
oil is the Holy Spirit,
living Torah is light,
lamps filled with oil and lit shine brightly,
a shining lamp is salvation.

Lamps cannot shine without oil and a spark. Recently I heard a story how a fire is started from a single match and a twig, and how the spaces between the twigs are also important. Torah cannot come alive without the Holy Spirit illumination. Without the Holy Sprit we too are only empty lamps!

Those who run out of oil, or refuse to buy it, are the people who refuse to heed the warning signs. It seems all fine to them at the moment. They think they have plenty of time.

Some of the “vital signs” of being saved and having new life in Messiah:
– a hunger for God’s Word
– a desire to share Good News with others
– a desire to know God more and be closer to God
– a witness of the Holy Spirit in their hearts
– a radical new way of life

to be continued…
