BANGLADESH: CYCLONE AFTERMATH & RECOVERY

5/25/20

Super Cyclone Amphan (5/16-21/2020) caused an estimated $13.4 billion in damage in the Bay of Bengal region (Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan). The Area already affected by a previous tropical storm (and of course the Covid-19 quarantine), where many homes have been completed destroyed, now experienced it again.

Many families who lost homes have been without shelter, food, and electricity. The weather improved, and people started to do repairs. We provided money for food distribution and tools for home repairs. The communities are pulling together. However, the quarantine has been extended till September, so the crisis is fart from being over.

Amphan cyclone! Already we’re suffering from COVID-19. It’s difficult to work for poor people who they work in field, rickshaw puller, van puller, fisherman, day labourers. When it’s no work so no food for them. But suddenly the tropical cyclone came and destroyed many things. People lost their homes. Problem for food, drinking water, sanitary latrine and shelter.

I and my family are well in your prayers, and everyone in the village is well, and everyone is busy repairing the house.

We came up with a new plan, which I call SEEDS BANK, to plant a community garden and rice fields. For this new wells and pumps have to be installed. Labor will be provided by volunteers from the community, who will share in the harvest. This plan, if it succeeds, will feed the whole community and make it self-sufficient. And that is our prayer.
